All employers have a duty of care to their employees under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA). The Act and its’ regulations clearly state an employer’s legal obligations with regard to achieving a safe working environment, so far as is reasonably practicable. Employee absence as result of work related injury or illness continues to be a major cost to UK business and new legislation introduced in 2008 increased the maximum penalty payable for a breach of safety legislation from £5,000 per offence to £20,000. It is therefore in the interests of any company and their employees to ensure that they are complying with current legislation. Any business with 5 employees or more must operate a safety management system incorporating a documented safety policy and risk assessments.
